the DS games are like that iirc, but I recommend instead Re Digitize, it's on 3DS and PSP fan translated. You go around with one mon and it evolves based on how you train it which is the whole selling point of the pets and the franchise itself, and it mogs all the 3DS games on exploration and adventure
