How was the rivalry between Digimon and Pokemon during the late 90's and early 00's? Do you remember?

I always viewed Digimon as a rip-off Pokemon and avoided everything about it. So did everyone I knew.

I actually encountered Digimon first, when it initially aired on UK television in I believe 2000. I literally caught the 2nd episode the very first time it aired in the country. I became instantly obsessed with it and taped every single episode from that point onwards on VHS.

Some time afterwards I got my first game console, and N64 bundled with Pokemon Stadium. So I never believed Digimon was a Pokemon clone, if anything I believed the opposite.

I remember being really disappointed when friends would come round my house as a kid and I'd try to introduce them to a Digimon episode or one of the PS1 games, and they'd say "Digimon? That's just a Pokemon ripoff!" I'd get legit mad.

There was a rivalry? Guess I missed it, and so did everyone I knew. We just enjoyed them both.

They pretty much started at the exact same time. The first Digimon v-pets and Pokemon Red & Green both released in 1996 in Japan. It's just an astounding coincidence that the two biggest Japanese monster-collecting franchises began in the same year.

There wasn't much of a rivalry, I just remember people occasionally cracking jokes about Digimon being a ripoff even though it wasn't in reality. Mostly Digimon was just in the background, sometimes I'd hear people repeat the theme song - "digimon digital monsters digimon are the champions" - but that's about it. The people who grew up actually trying Digimon stuff generally liked it a lot.

It's interesting, Pokemon was in development for a long time (started 1990). Around the same time Pokemon finally came out in Japan, Tamagotchi came out and became a big craze too. Digimon evolved from the digital pets, being made as a more masculine Tamagotchi basically (as Digital Monster).

Separate roots but came out at the same time. Pokemon had some influence on the direction of Digimon as a franchise, but not the creation of Digimon.

The Pokemon show was perfectly fine, I never got the distaste. The fact that it's lighthearted and episodic was pretty damn normal for the time. Plus I just find the Pokemon world to be more appealing.

Anyone who watched (and liked) Digimon first would struggle getting into the Pokemon anime because it was just such a huge downgrade in terms of story, tone and characterisation.

Even as a very young kid (under 10 years old) I didn't like watching Pokemon much because I could only think "why isn't it as interesting as digimon?" Mostly I just watched the Pokemon films and barely paid attention to the TV anime.

i could never get anyone to play either trading card game. Other kids just didn't have the attention span, so they were only interested in coomlecting. i didn't get to play Pokémon TCG until i was an adult. Magic is better though.

There was never any rivalry, Pokemon was always a much bigger franchise. Digimon was basically quirky Pokemon or not-Pokemon.

Most people only knew about Digimon as an anime.
I had a Dinky Dino as my intri to digital pets. Then, my one special class for retards with learning slowness that i was in, offered rewards monthly based on some fun money system they had. The top prize one month was a VPet, and I wanted it bad. Me and another kid raced to get it that month through whatever trivial task rewarded the cash and on the friday we could redeem them, i only got it because i was the faster runner and was able to race him to the classroom first to redeem the cash in for it. Thought it was cool, for about a week. Then later the anime came out and i thought it was awesome. I already liked Pokemon and the show, but Digimon monster designs were on a whole other level and i still think they are way better than Pokemon. Im fact, my favorite Poke designs are when they go more abstract and cool looking, like the Ultra Beasts. I had no idea about the World games as a kid(was an N64igger) on PS1 and i would have been all over them, especially 3 since it was kinda like Pokemon gameplay. I also wish I had been more aware of the few LCD pets and games in the 2000s that did get released between the original and 20th Anniversary vpets. I would have definitely bought them had i seen em in K-Mart since i loved lcd game shit.

I actually assumed the same thing at first about Digimon, the fact that my first exposure to it was the FoxKids Saban dub didn't helped, but then the Latino dub premiered in FoxKids LA and that's when the whole localization thing started to be known to me.

Heck the Latino dubs were polar opposites.

Pokemon was the most popular show but it was the 4kids bastardization for evern and ever and it started dubbed at Audiomaster 3000 which was mostly known for the Simpsons and American cartoon shows.

Digimon got picked up by their rival Intertrack who dubbed it based on the japanese version (while keeping the Saban names but nothing else), who dubbed DragonBall and Sailor moon and were like, THE Latino dubbing company for anime, then during the dubbing production of Digimon 02 and New Dr.Slump shit happened and they lost the good voice actors so they move to fucking Cuernavaca and hired a bunch of nobodies who never acted in their lives and their dubs went to shit, even if they picked up shows like Nube and YuYu Hakusho.

I remember digimon v-pets being advertised before pokemon really took root, which is technically atemporal. My friend trained a betamon , i didnt get a digivice until the adventure one. I was a huge champion for the digimon franchise growing up, teaching people about metalgreymon and people being like ' he dosent exist' and then apologizing to me months later. they way they iterated on Redigitize felt monster hunter esq in a good way. The game is flawed ( Roster, Aesthetics) but the myriad of quests and the content variety is very good.

I remember both were everywhere in the cultural zeitgeist and there was tons of merch for it. It feels like Digimon gave up even though it had the better show.

I remember watching Digimon, Yu-Gi-Oh, and Pokemon religiously as a kid, but never really thought of them in an adversarial context.
I think Yu-Gi-Oh and TCG are more rival like then Digimon and Pokemon ever really were.

How much it mattered was pretty regional. Most of the country were Pokefans, other parts were Digimon followers.

I was unfortunate enough to go to school in an area where things were 50/50, and the rivalry was intense. Some poor kid got the crap kicked out of him for wearing a Pikachu t-shirt. I switched over to PC games to stay out of the violence (plus doom clones were a lot more fun by that point).

As another anon said it depends country or region, for example beyblade was huge popular in Italia.

But digimon was really his own thing we managed to get most of the game from 5th and 6th generations.

Yeah you can tell they wanted to not jump straight into Digimon 02 and wanted another season focused on 01 cast to solve this issues but BANDAI forced them to the jap "tradition" of "DITCH CAST, NEW AEASON, NEXT GIMMICK".

And then Adventure 02 is when they REALLY fucked it all up, Then Tamers was a breath of fresh air in spite of also having unresolved stuff, and Frontier sucked again.....

That's part of the reason so many people still think Digimon started as an anime first. The show was the only major appealing product outside Japan, or even the only product shipped to some countries. It seems like only more recently the Vpets and vidya are able to escape its shadow and people realize there was more to the franchise.

Pokemon had a well-timed release as a media franchise in America, and they maintained that momentum for a few cycles after that until "pokemania" died. The anime was timed to start airing a few weeks before the games were available, so kids watching the anime who got the game were watching Ash fight Brock and struggle while they were at the same point in the game trying to learn the mechanics. This momentum carried through the US release of Yellow, the movie, and the next season of the anime which introduced some Gold & Silver Pokemon like Togepi. The hype rolled on, and everyone was super excited for Gold & Silver.

Bandai saw what was happening with Pokemon and managed to get the English Dub of the Digimon anime out mere months after the Japanese airing in 1999. Digimon began airing in America shortly before the release of yellow and word of mouth started building that it was better than Pokemon. The Pokemon movie came out, and was pretty bad unless you were 8. Gold & Silver got delayed around the time Season 1 of Digimon was wrapping up in America. Game Freak had nothing for the Pokemon fans for almost a year. So Bandai ensured that Digimon Season 2 was announced in America during Season 1's finale. To build hype for Season 2, they start re-airing all of Season 1 on weekdays. Kids all across America get hooked on the episodic storytelling and tune in every day after school too see what happens next. Digimania is launched. Season 2 starts airing 3 months before Gold and Silver release. The Digimon Movie hits theaters a week before Gold and Silver release. No one can know how much, but Digimon successfully interferes with the release. Gold & Silver sell a fraction of the copies of RBY, and many former fans don't like them or skip them entirely, many of them get Yu-Gi-Oh GBC.

Pokemania is dead until RSE. Digimania dies because Season 3 is too weird for normalfag kids and the games aren't great. All the Digimaniacs and Pokemaniacs jump ship to Yu-Gi-Oh.

I never saw it as a rivalry because Digimon had none of the appeal of Pokemon. Pokemon was about collecting creatures to form a team that you train and give orders to, in order to beat other people doing the same. Either you doing it yourself against the CPU or friends, or watching Ash do it. Digimon is about a group of kids who all have a single creature each, and the creature does everything for them, they don't give it orders or anything, way more boring. If anything, Yu-Gi-Oh was more like Pokemon. Probably why I liked Tamers, the collectible card aspect.

Huge is an overstatement. It was briefly very popular in Brazil during S01 and S02 of the anime, because it aired on our biggest tv broadcaster and a famous childrens entertainer dubbed the opening song.

Nevertheless, it was never as big as Pokemon and I doubt the popularity transfered to Digimon games, since I never met anyone who played them, but I know several people who watched the anime.

Globo airing Digimon was basically an answer to Record airing Pokemon.

After that, both animes moved to cable channels, but Digimons popularity waned while Pokémon stayed strong.

SSSS gridman was about kaiju rehabilitation and brought things full circle by introducing gridknight after gridman inspired the prevalence of armored humans in digimon's design. You could also point out the parallels between digimon cores in this franchise, kaiju cores in kaiju 8 and how the spark exists in both transfomers continuity and digimon continuity ( even refrenced by the goddess of eorzea/ivalice in ff14 when she sings to you- we hated digimon tri why would endwalker steal it's ending lmao)

early digimon games are nightmare games that only the most hardcore could defeat. It was years before people were even allowed to reference the franchise and then we saw references in kaiju 8 and JJK in one year. By episode 2 of kaiju 8 i was ranting to my teenage wife about how we are going to see 'kaiju oversoul' in the series and thats how they ended the first season. ( Kaiju oversoul stemming from Aero Veedramon's Dragon Impulse, Milleniummon and later Gankoomon and Jesmon)

There was no rivalry. Pokemon is a spiritual successor and hybrid of SMT 2/Saga/DQ, Digimon is a spinoff of Tamagotchi. The two series are nothing alike beyond having an abbreviation for "monster" in the name. It's like comparing Mario to Harvest Moon.

Nonexistent. There was the odd kid who claimed that Digimon was better (and they were probably right) but it was nowhere near as popular as Pokemon. Most people viewed it as a knockoff because there were a whole lot of anime franchises with video games that were trying to ape the multimedia experience with collectables, video games and animes. Medabots was my personal favorite of that era. Yugioh was another one that didn't take off in the same way pokemon did, but ended up being pretty popular. More popular than Digimon at least. Monster Rancher was another franchise that attempted the same thing. Beyblade was another one. Out of all the franchises in the 90's that were going for the Videogame/Collectable/Anime trifecta Pokemon reigned supreme and everything else was just some side game. Oddly enough nobody I knew who collected the Pokemon cards actually played the game, they were just popular as collector's pieces.

I think everyone saw it as a "Pokemon ripoff" but we all still watched the anime at least. I remember the ending of the very first season being pretty emotional.

After watching the european dubs of Digimon with the cool original theme song, it was so incredibly weird to see the US version a few years later.

The european dubs were weird, they kept all the original songs, but used the US terms for names, ie. Gatomon instead of Tailmon, rookie->champion->ultimate->mega instead of child->adult->perfect->ultimate, etc.

Yeah, it was often reported in gaming mags. Eventually Bandai called it off because they were no longer near bankruptcy due to the Tamagotchi being a surprise success. Digimon started out as two tamagotchis you could link together and have the critters fight. That's how I remember it from the 90s, anyway.
