or you watch some old film and they just have bread out all the time. just goes on the side, ready to be sliced when necessary. not wrapped in anything, not in a bread bin.

come on, flies will (and do) land on that bread. plus shit like you're washing your hands, splatter a bit of water on there. random bits of dust/whatever in the air. nobody gives bread a quick rinse like fruit/veg/etc.
