Costco is nothing special, it’s literally just a wholesale supermarket with an in house food court where you can buy cheap American slop. But to the midwesterner it’s heaven on earth. They live in a landscape so deprived of quality food that there are people out there whose favorite pizza is unironically from Costco (pic related).
Flyover America is a truly depressing, soulless place. When I lived in Ohio (thankfully only for a short period) I went to the only IKEA in a 100 mile radius. It was absolutely packed, and as I was looking for the shelves I’d come to buy I realized most people there weren’t even shopping. Midwesterners will literally drive for miles to go to an IKEA just to look at it. They treat it almost like a theme park. There were people in the food court saving the little Swedish flags that come in the mashed potatoes as souvenirs. There were adults and kids alike taking selfies and even filming themselves walking around inside IKEA.
