It's easy to argue that the other adept kids deserved it, since they were evil (and young teens are basically mentally mature mini-adults in GV), but that he failed and things got worse make it feel like he wasted their deaths. It's similar to how killing a deer and leaving it to rot on the ground would be wasteful of that animal's life.
