Just to show off Grid Cartographer. Has a bit of a learning curve, but it has nice features. On top of having a window you can actually plug in an emulation window, you can also get it to sync up with the game you're playing if you don't want to draw by hand to various levels. You can just have it set up to auto-draw a map that is pre-drawn and it will uncover fog of war, you can have it just autodraw with no pre-drawn map, or you can just have it so the game just has an icon where you are and you manually draw the map. Personally I think part of the experience is drawing out the maps, but if you really detest it, you can turn those things on.

Does cost money though.
