Sort of a biological nanite swarm. Going by certain forbidden histories, you might suppose all life on Earth was the result of... The Elder things simply not bothering with exterminating the byproducts of the bioengineering necessary to breed menial workers.

Some few have sentience, after a fashion.
They aren't friendly very often.

It probably quarantined it, yeah. Pop these open and fiddle around, you can usually get it to relinquish the files. Often enough you have to re-download them anyways, since it likes to eat them (regardless of "Oh sure I'll just bring them back")
