Basically light is one of the cheapest ways to make a room more comfy in appearance.
For comfy lighting there's really only two rules you need:
No cold lights (so a warm color temperature, unless it's for a work surface, in which case colder light is fine)
and no central light source. If you have a single ceiling lamp to illuminate your room it looks sterile.
To get around that you want multiple smaller light sources thrown around the room.
Look at some sources for rooms you find to look comfortable and you'll note that it largely tracks with those two rules.

The big issue with that approach though is that rather than one big switch to turn on the light in a room, you now have multiple lamps that you need to switch on, in the past the solution was often a weird solution like multiple power strips rigged in series, so you could toggle them all with one switch, but that lead to cables and limited options on where to put lights. These days with ioT smart lamps (I use zigbee for example) it's as simple as clicking a setting on my phone (or a physical button that talks to the zigbee network).

Picrel is some of the changes I had done for my room and posted sometime back, the effect seems less strong on the image than IRL, it makes a massive difference (the white color in those pics in the after looks warmer IRL, also that sunset lamp is on the opposite side of the room now and pointed at the ceiling for more of a moody setting).
Far from perfect, but a massive difference for not much money.
