The South in particular is a sore spot for the North because it was supposed to be conquered in 1865 after the war was won. It was their glorious triumph of progress meant to be met without further resistance and usher in a utopian age of industry and progress. Then militant Reconstruction set in and those ideals never met reality. The South started to wage a decade long insurgency because white southerners did not consider themselves conquered and won the peace. Every delusion the North built up and tried to implement failed, miserably, and the legacy of that failure still haunts them. Their notion of historical progress was popped and the symbols of defiance strikes deep into their psyche because it is a reminder of their hubris and failures. To ignore it is a tacit admission history has not been kind to them and they simply can't have that. The very existence of the South to this day is a constant reminder they seethe over.
