Its a VN with a shoddy MMO tied to the back of it. I'd say play the free trial till level 50 or so, but the jobs are so fucking boring and sanded down that I can't in good faith say you'd have fun, because frankly the story isn't very interesting unless you really get hooked on the geopolitics of it.
Its a funny thing too, you could easily compare the arc xiv has to the one monster hunter has had, where it's sanded down all the friction in its gameplay for the sake people who want to play a story no one asked for, except xiv's arguably gets pretty good. (300 hours and 2 expansions in)
