They're writing the wrong stories.

The Sonic/Robotnik relationship boils down to "Robotnik spends months building shit and Sonic effortlessly destroys entire planets worth of it in less than 24 hours". You can force drama with stuff like Werehog that slows him down but ultimately if your story can't hold up to the raw speed of Sonic, why are you writing about Sonic?
