It's not, and you know it. Everyone knows it. We can't just 'pretend' it's working when it is so obviously not working. Our candidates are pre-selected with blackmail. Nobody wants foreign wars and yet we will always get them. Nobody wants to support foreign governments with trillions in US tax dollars, and yet it will always happen. Both sides are irredeemably corrupt and there is simply no way to vote to fix it. The republic is dead and everyone is just waiting for a Caesar to appear. Don't worry - religious freedom isn't going anywhere. Our multiracial society isn't going anywhere. American values ARE NOT going anywhere. None of that has to die with democracy - not in a country this big.
