I think it really depends on what you define as a western. Bone Tomahawk is a horror movie set in the West, but I would not call it a western. Is a western any movie set west of St Louis? Or does it have to about specific themes?

I love Wind River but I would disagree that it is a neo western, the plot isn't such that it could be set in other locations without really changing much.

Conversely, Outland IS a Western. I mean it's a remake of High Noon yeah, but it deals with themes specific to Western stories about law and justice and whether people follow the law because they earnestly believe in it or simply because the risk of punishment from those above them deters them?

Assault on Precient 13 is also a Western because of this IMO. Same for Zulu, where you could swap the Brits for US Cavalry and the Zulus for the Commanche.

To add my own, if you can find a 70mm screening of the director's cut of Heaven's Gate, yeah, it really is that fucking good.

Also check out Osterns, Soviet Western movies. White sun of the Desert unironically a really fun movie.
