Matt and Trey are 50 y/o gen xers who come from a different world. They're on the way out along with the boomers. Their brand of humor is a combination of vaguely mean 'subversive edginess' reddit big brained nothing is sacred and centrist fence sitting. Nobody today thinks a centrist 'le both sides are silly' and 'dont take things so seriously XD' is any kind of insightful or witty. Nobody wants to hear the gen x brand of cynicism today. I think South Park is an even worse peddler of nihilistic cynicism than Rick & Morty.

I used to think it was respectable to not carry water for anyone and only want to amuse themselves. But in this day and age the average person probably finds that attitude abhorrent and can't really afford to go around thinking 'the world is a silly messed up place heh nothing really matters tho'.
