The only style I've used so far that's introduced discomfort or gameplay issues is the Vader 3/4 layout, but I could see it happening with S2 Pro/Gamesir style. You can mostly get used to it, but it always has a slightly negative impact on ergonomics and the outer buttons are easy to press if your grip tightens in a tense situation. Granted, I haven't used Elite paddles or the eXtremeRate attachments, and paranoia about the comfort of the latter in addition to the 3rd party controller tier price tag hasn't made me confident in trying it.

I wonder how you'd feel about the IINE Bastet/Fantech Nova Pro style. I didn't like them at first since they weirdly actuate from extending fingers instead of pressing, but there's zero impact on ergonomics and you'd need a pretty specific grip to misfire.

Personally the biggest selling point to back buttons is for games that have reasons to press multiple face buttons at once, or for things that would require claw grip on an asymmetrical layout. There's a decent amount of games where I don't use them at all. I'd much rather have them than switch to keyboard for games that want me to simultaneously move+item or jump+attack.
