When you play Joal through the area leading up to saving Ellie (in the original PS3 version, not the versions that came later that they altered) you find a series of recording informing Joel that they'd done this before, and it's failed every single time before. They figure Ellie will die and that they won't get anything out of it like every time before but they're willing to try again for a sub-1% chance it will work this time. She's not even the first person they'd cut up and killed.

Then you get to the room and the guy from the Last of Us Part 2 isn't even there (a white guy, abbey's father) because in the original version the guy about to cut into Ellie that Joel shoots is a black dude.

The Last of Us Part 2 was never intended to happen, they literally had to retcon the Last of Us 1 in further versions of 1 to make 2 make sense.
