Viruses and other malicious programs are just as rampant as they have been since the limewire and e-mule days. When you just downloaded something and prayed that if it's not what you wanted then it's atleast lesbian porn and not a virus.

Sites masquerading as reputable sources are just as much of an issue as it ever was, I propose that (You) are simply used to them and now know instinctively how to avoid them.
