Because reinforcing social norms in order to minimalize the potential for danger (or if danger arrives, enshrining them in the state of "fitting in") is an ingrained survival tactic. These people don't survive on their own, they rely upon the consensus of those around them. Why doesn't Disney just do the controlled opposition thing? Disney properties aren't cool, if something is recognizable as "Disney" less people will find it appealing outside of maybe a limited, few favorites. So just quietly fund some counter-culture stuff that isn't Disney, but actually is Disney since you're profiting off it and shaking hands. Then when it runs its course just buy it formally and keep doing that.
