For the Soviet Union, the surface fleet existed more or less to screen their SSBN bastion up north from NATO subs and ASW aircraft, and try to force landings in Denmark. It was almost definitely gonna fail in both cases. The submarines were to pull a Germany and harass cross-Atlantic shipping before it could reinforce/feed the Euros with ammo. For the Russians, it's a way to launder money for their next yachts, that's about it. I actually read Admiral Gorshkov's assembled works a ways back, and was really let down. He'd been sold to me as the brilliant naval mind that was gonna make the Soviet Navy a true blue water force to match the USN, but all I got is that he was a delusional retard that sucked off the red army of WWII every three pages and seethed about the American island-hopping campaign. Also, obligatory vatnik assertion of 'achksullly, the Battle of Trafalgar wasn't that important compared to the Russian Army!'
