Batman Beyond and Metroid Prime are usually the first things that come to mind when deflecting the "it was a shitty idea" criticisms.
It's not the idea that sucks but your ability to work with it. Any concept that sounds like garbage during a pitch like 'fps metroid' or 'batman in high school' can be spun around into something cool with enough creativity.
