I often thought something along these lines, the "cosmic punishment" isn't because of the self-preserving pathetic moralism of the conquered "you were mean to us so the universe now magically punishes you!!!", rather, it's amoral, it befalls on Europeans precisely because they abandoned the predatory and martial values that had led them to being the apex human predator once.
