This is what I felt the later Mario platformers missed; they were all unique from SMB1 to SMW and even SMB2JP had some unique stuff (Luigi's physics, reverse warps, etc). NSMB the first game at least had some unique bosses and it was a return to form, but the subsequent games weren't interesting. NSMB2 was when I realized they were creatively bankrupt. If you dive further into the SML games, SML3 was a gateway into a new platformer franchise. NSMB only led to Wonder, which was more or less the same game with a better presentation. If anything, it was easier than NSMB. If they want to salvage the work the put into Wonder, a sequel that changes a lot of the original game needs to happen. They'll have to really go outside the box and do something with it that no one expects.
