Other people have implemented VWF into other games as well and you see the same problems - the main differences being that something like Final Fantasy 6 isn't printing a whole ass brick of text on the menu at once most of the time, but scrolling, so the "slowdown" is masked the majority of the time.
EarthBound just does not have an answer to this because it insisted on VWF and drawing the whole screen worth of text at once every single time in what was previously a very quick menu setup.
