Can't go wrong with wheat either to be fair.
Barley, spelt grow good in the more northern regions of Great Britain; oats too.
Rice is a difficult one de lid, they prefer warm and humid conditions all year round - ie tropical climates where they only have a wet and dry season or a Mediterranean climate where the spring and summer are warm enough to eke out a crop of them rather than the four seasons we get here.
If someone could genetically engineer them to suffer cold temperature drops it might work
