You're right. But you're ignoring the die sizes, TSMC's production markups, Nvidia's capex increases & R&D increases and the lack of competition.

Also if I recall, just prior to the 1080Ti launch, AMD had heavily marketed their upcoming generation which was supposedly competing with the 1080Ti with teasers such as Poor Volta, which had expectations skewed. The rumors pointed to a HMB2 GPU which was about to give team green a run for their money.
The 1080ti's low price was a knee jerk reaction to this. They wanted to undercut AMD and avoid any lost sales prior to AMD's Vega Launch.
Did people here completely forget how they had milked everyone just a few months prior when they initially launched their 10 series cards? Their "Founders" cards were $100 over the AIB cards and were only 100 bucks cheaper than the 1080ti.

The thing is, AMD's campaign worked. They probably thought that a repeat of the R9 290X vs Titan was going to happen, where they were caught with their pants down. The price reflects exactly that.
