This is by the way fairly interesting and is really cements my view that my tentative original view was mistaken and that “ヤクザ” in Japanese does in fact mean “yakuza” and not “gangster”. I translated it to “gangster” once after conferring with a native speaker who said it felt completely normal to use “ヤクザ” in Japanese to refer to say Chinese or Italian gangsters but in my experience they use “マフィア” then nigh 100% of the time and here “ヤクザ” without qualifier to directly contrast with “多国籍マフィア”.

I don't think this for instance is natural to do with “アニメ” and that's not how discussions between native speakers unfold or how they speak. When they specifically talk about Japanese cartoons they do always say “日本のアニメ” but “ヤクザ” on its own can definitely mean Japanese organized crime it seems so I feel the correct translation is in fact “yakuza”, not “gangster” after all.
