What's the best way to go about formatting my bots responses?

I'm convinced the first message means squat because I have it formatted in the exact way I want the bot to speak (and it's lengthy too, around 500 chars, so not overly lengthy) and the bot just kinda wings it making me think it's a prompt issue.

Basically I like the following format:

>Asterisk (*) to decribe actions, narration etc
>Speech Marks (") for dialogue
>Backtick (`) for internal dialogue

Anyone got an easy fix? I figure it had to be in the sys prompt or Author Notes section (Silly Tavern) but all my attempts are futile or at least, very inconsistent.
