>Most players in ttrpgs play chosen-one style main characters that sit at the center of the plot.
All games center around the players. This does not make them "Chosen-one style main characters" or anything close to it, most systems don't even have any mechanics for such a thing.
>D&D is the world's most popular RPG for a reason anon,
...And it does the opposite of what you're claiming? The most popular class in D&D is and has always been one of the objectively weakest classes. And the most popular subclasses are also some of the weakest possible options.
D&D is also a game where you're almost always fighting something stronger than your own character and that you can only bring down through teamwork.
It's fact that most people just don't care about being powerful. They just have an idea they want to execute.
>Powergaming=/=Optimization. The people who care about optimization are min/maxers
Frankly these all mean the same thing just to different degrees of seriousness and antisocial behavior. A munchkin who will break rules and badger the ST for shit is trying to play as powerful a character as he can, just like the powergamer. The difference is that a powergamer (per your definition, I just call them optimizers) stay within the bounds of the game rules and are socially aware enough to, usually, understand when something will cause problems for the table. Though they often end up causing problems anyways.
