it doesnt have to be super deep but just make skills and combos fit different purposes like area of effect, crowd control, knock ups, single target dps.
you really dont need a big fat combo list and DMC weapon switching, just give the player some meaningful options. even zelda games do this despite only requiring mashing B to win.
most of the moves in frontiers did the same thing but stomping was just objectively superior, and the aoe was very weak. why would you use the special zig zag homing attack when you could just stomp?

we are working with the powers of cartoon squash and stretch, and gap closing abilities. sonic's attack range or his limb length is not a problem despite the warehog existing solely to fix what isnt broken.
worst case scenario just make a wind streak or a blur infront of the attack and give that visual the real hitbox
