IDW had some potential but so far it's been let down after let down. I think the main reason for it sucking is that the comics are based around peacetime with a few odd conflicts sprinkled throughout the story. In the Archie series there was just an ongoing conflict between eggman and various factions that were constantly changing the balance of power. Right now IDW comics feels like filler in between the games.

Not OP, but I also think that Sage's inclusion softens Eggman's character to a detrimental degree.
A consistently of Eggman is he does not care about his allies. He surrounded himself with robots that have to follow his every command. He scrapped and repurposed Gamma's "brothers" because they couldn't find a frog. He was going to let Rouge die on Prison Island when she got trapped. Metal was pissed at Eggman and tried to overthrow him in Heroes. He constantly used foul play to control beings who were stronger than him (Chaos, Zeti, Dark Gaia). This gave him another nice contrast to Sonic, who makes friends by being a likeable dude.
Sage throws a wrench in this. Eggman cares about Sage for, honestly, no good reason. All she does is make fun of Sonic and keep him company during Frontiers, and that is apparently for Eggman to make her the exception. It doesn't help that nothing happens in Frontiers' omega low energy story. Seriously, almost every cutscene is two characters shooting the breeze in an open field. There are logs you can find about where Eggman talks more about Sage's development. But not only are those optional, it is still a weak justification for Eggman to reevaluate his viewpoint when you compared it to the years of him acting opposite. Eggman could barely tolerate himself as an ally in Generations. I personally think Eggman being a pure evil, self serving villain made him a better character. Sage is just "non-human character learns about humanity #5042" and she isn't even outstanding in that field. You could argue that this series has done the same character archetype but way better multiple times (Shadow, Gamma, Chip).

The problem with Ian writing IDW Eggman is that he wants to have his cake and eat it too. He wants to have the Psycho-Hitler Eggman from Archie, but he also wants the more flexible, amicable Eggman from the games. Both interpretations of Eggman work fine in their own context. But they really don't mesh together well. You can't have Eggman create a zombie apocalypse and later have him and Sonic casually team up to take on smaller villains afterwards. You can't have Knuckles and the Chaotix apologize for busting up an Eggman base when he wasn't their mark after all the destruction and death(?) he's caused. They want the "Go Karting with Bowser" dynamic, but they've made Bowser into Ridley.
