I think the show is deliberately throwing us red herrings for this, so I think it'd be foolish to try and guess at this point. Hell, I wouldn't be surprised if I turned out to be Kinger just to make us and the cast feel bad.

Someone abstracts. Caine basements them. Everything goes back to normal. Parallels Episode 1. Only lesson learned is that none of it meant anything.

They learn that they're actually just brain scans of their original selves, so they're all basically just glorified NPCs and escape is impossible/Caine hard resets the circus to fix himself and erases everyone as a consequence.

Kinger was one of the original programmers of the circus, all of the characters are just brain scans, one of the characters is an npc, and the npc's are just repurposed players, or parts of them, who have abstracted.
