FFXI They were pets that fought along side you. You could make it so you could have them out full-time with good gear.
That was just the Summoner class.
Beastmaster you could charm pets in the wild to fight for you, and summon them with items.
Puppetmaster you summoned after you got done blowing all your gil on attachments to customise it, then realise its shit.
