I don't think many people, if any at all, got into any trouble for it, because that's not obscure knowledge. Now, the Zip-22 is infamous for being just a complete piece of shit with no real redeeming qualities.
Doubly infamous because USFA used to make extremely high quality and improved Colt 1873 clones (they were heirloom quality revolvers), and they had sold off all of their tooling for that to tool up to make the Zip-22, which is a kind of gun nobody had ever asked for or wanted.
The logic with that was that they would just buy that tooling back after the Zip-22 had made them lots of money, something which it was never going to do.
