Volume 4 extra pages had a mention that a gifted one's personality and other traits do have an effect of some degree in how the gift manifests, in addition that it's possible to enhance the gift through training in some cases at least. It's totally possible that Helem herself does not really have an understanding of the real inner workings of her own gift, and a lack of training would only amplify that.
