Gojo to me, was a man that had no hope for himself because he was the metaphorical titan, Atlas. Forever holding up the modern Jujutsu Sorcery world not just due to the misfortune of his birth, but due to his humanity drifting away from him because he was not seen as Satoru Gojo but THE "Satoru Gojo". The reliance, the observance and lack of participation from other characters left Gojo to fit one mold in his life, to be a tool, to be a weapon and to be a "monster". A man forever defined by his titles, by his strength, but not by his own dreams. Just like Atlas, he was never able to live on the planet he upholds, chained to a fate given to him almost out of necessity.

I doubt Gojo wanted to die against Sukuna, but I do not doubt the fact that Gojo wanted to contribute something of value to the future. In fact, his death resulted in Sukuna's eventual defeat. He stopped trying to learn how to live and was able to finally learn how to die. Gojo fans who are upset about chapter 236 fail to realize this. Even with hindsight, Sukuna never learned how to die, he died regretful, and resentful.

While Gojo may be a loser, the biggest in fact, he lost so no one else has to. He finally took responsibility. He finally held himself up and died standing.
