I agree, but we don’t get much of him in the series before he dies. He fulfills his role as a mentor and dies. Megumi on the other hand is a young deuteragonist next to Yuji, who goes against most other traits that fit the deuteragonist. (You could say Gojo is a mix of that and a mentor)
I think a big part of the hate for Megumi is the "potential" part. People have certain expectations of him which he refuses to meet. Nanami didn’t had any of that.

If the series is popular, a banger. All this sets up a great arc at the end. I mean, this is the JJK story now. Everything else before this, even lifes of adult Yuji would now be considered a prequel. Will Gege treat this series as his "JJK volume 0" before he decides to continue the story forward? I don’t personally see Modula wrapping up JUJUTSU KAISEN as a whole in just three volumes, with how much time Gege is taking to slowly flesh out the new world he’s presenting us.
