Studio Topcraft is involved, meaning a 37 year old hayao Miyazaki is involved in the production of that movie. Topcraft dissolves, Studio assets were split acquired by Hayao Miyazaki which all of were used in the very first interation of their office for Studio Ghibli. The other half became Studio PAC which will be acquired by Walt Disney Animation anyway.

That art style could have been designed by people who were rebelling against Tezuka standard of the time, or those Japanese designers that were, for the first time, able to acquire American drawing manuals and comics, and references. And studied and referenced the shit out of those imports.

The Japanese people who specifically were forcing the semi-realistic style of American comics into Manga were the attempt into bringing maturity into manga, even though it was shortlived they called it gekiga.
