Death Frost Doom kinda sucks.

DM wanted to do it, and he's the only one who enjoyed it. Two guys died almost as soon as we got to the shrine because one tried playing a key on an organ. From that point on everyone soured.

We all just wanted to leave and couldn't think of a good reason to keep going, but we kept at it because that's just what you're expected to do. No one cared about the "mystery." I'm still not sure what was going on other than "spooky stuff." We stopped playing early.

DM said it gets better and we should give it a 2nd chance in the future.

Moldvay Basic is about 50 pages and pretty dense. I think there's still some room in the spectrum before it gets down to one page.

I have no idea what could be simplified though. Moldvay made it just about as lean as he possibly could. Aside from maybe trimming down combat a little more, the game is skeletal.

I remember playing DFD over a decade ago, probably not too long after it came out.
This was before any of us knew what the fuck we were doing, least of all the GM. He made some pretty big changes to the adventure, because he read through it and didn't like how bleak it was. Death Frost Doom is bleak, who could have guessed.
One big change was replacing any instant-death with really bad curses instead, something he was rolling on a table. We didn't know this, or really anything about what the adventure was supposed to be like, but one player was just super fucking unlucky (and stupid). He must have triggered like five curses before any of the rest of us had a single one and he was this deformed hunchback with one shrivelled arm and one black testicle or some hapsburg shit.
I don't remember much else about the adventure beyond some naked frozen guy.
I'm actually feeling nostalgic for that game though, as dumb as it ended up being.

Was during one of my acks games. The party chose to flee the cannibal caverns, but one got left behind due to bad initiative (the MU). The party saw him get over taken and pinned down as they ran off. The MU was effectively "dead", but for evocative purposes, i had the above situation happen to the MU, so that when the party confronted the cannibals for revenge (and rescue?), they presented their "trophy". This of course led to immediate combat, and the reserve squad in back gutted the nugget, while the others grabbed an inside and ate it.

Yes im a sick fuck but the monsters are meant to be monstrous. Going into caverns full of blood, human body parts, and crazed man-eaters should NOT be comfortable.

It's a completely bonkers, epic deep dive into the end of time, easily one of the most unique books I've ever read. And it's even crazier given how old the book is. Authors today try hard to come up with weirder shit because it feels that everything has been done already, but this stuff just came natural to WHH .

I agree with you, though, what makes it truly legendary is the writing style. It's super archaic and full of weird repetitions, it's like it's someone from the 1600s narrating, giving it a kind of retrofuturism feel to it. But once you get into that hypnotic, ritualistic rhythm, it totally sells the horror and the sheer, terrifying scale of a silent, dying universe, making it a foundational and utterly unforgettable piece of cosmic horror literature.

If you like HP Lovecraft, you'll love WH Hodgson.

It's not a great one by any measure, but it's definitely an interesting experiment with an adventure like DFD.

I joined an AD&D game yesterday. Was excited all week for it.
We made characters, and we had a three-person team of MU/Fighter/Thief, and we went out adventuring. We took care of a goblin-and-trap-filled cave, dragged out a sack of gold, and that was basically it.
It was like a stereotype of a game. Everything was just slotting into place. I kept expecting some sort of twist that never came. I was expecting something Halloween-related, but there wasn't even any undead, just goblins.
I hope the DM was just playing it safe for a first game. I didn't hate it, but I don't really want to do that again.

For a sudden huge outsized surge of people recommending the game, a game that had come out a decade earlier, to just suddenly materialize during the kickstarter for the new edition is going to make people suspicious. And, those suspicions lead to people questioning the advertisment-sounding pro-ACKS posts, and looking into them to discover some of them are from sockpuppet accounts, and it looks like the ACKS shills aren't as clever as they imagined they were. If a majority of people on r/OSR actually had any reason to believe the mods weren't justified in banning ACKS for brigading, they could have actually argued or even gone off to a different subreddit. Instead, other subreddits joined in the ban, because the evidence of brigading was that convincing.

I've never shilled ACKS anywhere, and I don't run it (I would if my table asked I guess, hypothetically). I was on /r/osr a lot around then, saw one ACKS thread that I glanced at, and a few days later someone make a big "Macris is a double hitler" thread, and then not long after that the mods made some thread claiming there was a bunch of shit there.
They never banned me, they deleted my posts in the announcement thread, plus other posts.
