List of popular Sega IPs:
>Sakura Wars (because it debuted on the Saturn, their only successful console in Japan)
>Persona (not a SEGA creation)
>Yakuza
>Puyo Puyo (again, not a SEGA creation)
>Hatsune Miku (not owned by SEGA, they only have game rights)
>Phantasy Star (the Master System had moderate success in Japan)
You realize this is an abysmal list, right? You realize there are way more SEGA IPs than this, right? Most of their consoles were FLOPS. Most of their IPs were FLOPS in Japan as a result. Even ignoring all that, SA1 was one of their best sellers in Japan for a year straight on the Dreamcast even with its less than stellar sales. Good Japanese marketing was what made that happen. Yuji Naka flat out said Sonic was never marketed well in Japan for most of its existence, along with their console division. A Sonic fan that appeared on Sonic Station live during this year’s anniversary said Sonic Adventure had a lot of marketing, and that’s how he got the game and became a fan. Nintendo already had a monopoly on Japan by the time SEGA hit the scene, but what DIDN’T help was SoJ’s lackluster marketing of their games and IPs. Stop using Metroid as a comparison when they’re not even in similar circumstances whatsoever.
In Japan, SEGA’s arcade business had their primary focus, and that’s a verifiable fact.
