Reminded me of another character that people (not management) at WotC gave the bad treatment for because they didn't like the male white fighter stereotype even back then.

It's pretty blatant nowadays but back then you have actual artists and writers that hated that their hobby was overwhelmingly populated by white dudes and would go out of their way to show it without explicitly saying it. The hobby was pretty much infiltrated at that point, it just needed to create the fandom next which didn't really come about until the 2010s.
