Yes, people back in the day obviously thought aesthetics were far more important within Ethnic Nationalism than nerding out over some test result averages. Our current political climate and education systems generally have much more leniency and tolerancy than the 1930's which was a more serious political climate where any entrance of decadence would be counted as a severe transgression
