Yup, the facial hair evokes the bizarre cheek hair on a Daruma doll. I'll copy and paste a note regarding these here: "Daruma dolls are hollow, round Japanese dolls modelled after Bodhidharma. They are considered a talisman of good luck and perseverance. The left eye is filled in when the owner sets a goal or makes a wish. The second is filled in once that is fulfilled." I got this off Furinkan at some point. Apparently, the eyebrows are deliberately stylized to look like cranes and the cheek hair is stylized to look like tortoise shell. These are because both are symbols of longevity.
