It's absolutely that kind of game, though, 100%. I was in the "one hour in and wtf were the critics smoking?" camp. I was legit pissed off and feeling trolled. But it's the kind of game that keeps builiding upon itself and unraveling/revealing more layers. I got nearly 200 hours by the end of it and I was still having "wait, what? You can do that? that's crazy" moments towards the end. It's so epic in scale and full of secrets to uncover, which is the main appeal of it, uncovering all its secrets. The fact that it manages to maintain this constant supply of "aha" revelation moments over more than 100 hours is insane and why puzzle autists fall in love with the game even despite the serious flaws with the roguelike part of the game design.
You're promised a deep and complex puzzle game and you start with like 10 empty rooms, 2 of them that have those toddler-tier repeating puzzles and you think "wtf is this baby shit". It's a master troll move and borderline suicidal because if not for the positive word-of-mouth, this could have completely tanked the game on release, because it's such a slow drip start but then it keeps adding and adding and going in weirder directions. Those two rooms are not representative of the game at all. You have zero idea how insanely convoluted the draft building strategizing can get or how cryptic with so many interconnected or obfuscated layers puzzles can get.
