Capcom kind of has the opposite problem where they'll attempt a new main character for a series, and then dump his ass as soon as they realize he's not immediately as popular as his predecessor. Sometimes this shit can have lasting damage on their series too.
>Street Fighter tries Alex, he's not popular, so they stop making Street Fighter for a few years once III's done
>Ace Attorney tries Apollo, he's not as popular as Phoenix, so they spend the next several years with Edgeworth and Ghost Trick instead
>Mega Man X tries Axl, he's not as popular as X or Zero, so they finish X8 and then stop making new MMX games at all
>Devil May Cry tries Nero, he's not as popular as Dante, so they try to replace the series with DmC, only for that to be an even bigger stink, so they crawled back to Nero for a new game only after DMC4:SE made people like him more vocally
