>Are multiplayer games unfairly judged when it comes to GOTY awards?
TL;DR: There is nothing to award anymore. Besides, Quakes, Dooms, and Unreal Tournaments, etc, have won GOTY back in the game and they did deserve it. It was mindblowing in 1993 up to 2000. Not so much in 2025.
No. Completely fair. What you don't understand that to me as a gamer with a rich experience Wolfensein, DOOM II, Quake II, Quake III, Unreal Tournament, CS 1.6, etc, that I have played decades ago and still occasionally play in SP and MP at some odd LAN parties too, all these FPS are the same. Brown and/or piss filter medium to slow speed kind of a larp of tactical FPS have been there for me for over 20 years with Medal of Honor, Battllefileds, and Call of Duties. They're not innovative. I'm not sayin CS 2 is complete trash with over a million players online, but I'm saying, that I have played that game 25 years ago already. Before CS 1.6 even.
Plus, moden games ONLINE are ridden with cheaters, bots, junkie alcoholics you can't team up and play with, etc.

troonaloon, the truly high IQ individuals are playing games with delayed gratificiation, that is not always obvious. And requires planning and thinking and foresight. So an intelligent player will play something like Civilization. I think that civilization is boring. And RTS sadly became the ARPM sweaty fest. And computer RPG's have always sucked dick at being RPG's.
