If any multiplayer game was going to win GOTY, it should be Split Fiction. It had some of the most varied and imaginative gameplay and set pieces I've ever seen in a game, and the way the multiplayer component worked genuinely made it feel like you relied on your friend instead of just having some extra DPS or aggro for enemies. TL;DR: There is nothing to award anymore. Besides, Quakes, Dooms, and Unreal Tournaments, etc, have won GOTY back in the game and they did deserve it. It was mindblowing in 1993 up to 2000. Not so much in 2025.

That win is the perfect example of why live-service multiplayer games are kind of bad GOTY winners IMO. The Overwatch that won GOTY was the original 2016 release, but after a bunch of patches that game became literally unplayable. The Overwatch in later years (mainly 2018 with Brigette forcing GOATs meta and then the final solution to that in 2019 with role queue) is really just not the same game that won GOTY. With singleplayer games, barring very rare exceptions, any content after release just adds to the game, whereas live service games that new content actually replaces stuff.

Single-player games are inferior as games to multiplayer because there's no actual incentive to improve your skills and push the mechanics to the maximum in them. You play against static challenges and even the games which are considered the hardest can be beaten by about anyone willing to put time into it.

Multiplayer has you competing against others and you can still get shit on no matter how much you practice. It's true competition and challenge, akin to poker and chess.

Single-player games are praised as superior experiences for aspects outside of game mechanics, such as atmosphere, sound design, narrative, immersion.

A few things, the vast majority of multiplayer games people consider worth playing didn't come out that year, they've been out for a while. Successful multiplayer games by their nature don't push boundaries. They don't meaningful push technology forward because that would isolate the at least half the player base that if they can't even the game in the first place. Some games will try to have interesting art style like Marathon but every that played the beta said gameplay was bad its probably dead on arrival.

My personal opinion is I don't play multiplayer because they aren't worth playing. period. I don't believe live service slop deserves any accolades for anything.

That's not what an extraction shooter is by definition, you need to think more The Division 1 and 2 with its' Darkzone or Hunt: Showdown. Helldivers is a lot closer to an arcade-y horde shooter, there is no player gear to extract, just score modifiers and resources to level up and there is no hostile player element looking to relieve you of your gear. Hell, there are protections in place for the main currency you extract to buy more gear, something you would have to 'level' or sacrifice a gear slot or trait for in another game.

The core gimmick of an extraction shooter is the PvPvE; without the fear of some random 12 year old camped by the exit for 19 minutes killing you and undoing 20 minutes of work it's not really in the same genre.
