80 IQ genius here. I can EXACTLY tell you whats wrong with modern jrpgs, and why Exp 33 mogged the shit out them.
Its the cinematography the character presentation and the bloat. Let me elaborate.
Most AAA games are striving for a movie like interactive experience. JRPGs are one of them.
The problem with the japanese is that when you want to make a movie game, you need to learn and apply proper cinematography. They dont do that.
Take a look at FF7 reboots. There is barely any good cinematography in them. The camera moves erratically through the action scenes, they focus on the wrong scenes for the wrong reasons (like that cringy zoom on Aeris pouting face because uwu kawai desu) and fail to produce a rich, wallpaper-worthy, shots. Also, when it comes to key moments like Aeris death, they over direct them. Sometimes a simplistic and direct character placement and choreography can give more gravity to a scene, than a janky directed fast series of action shots that emphasize on the action rather than the overall happening of the scene.
Second, its the character expressions. Every ff character bechaves like an alien. They are unable to convey emotion properly to reach the audience with all that anime like behaviour.
Third, its the covoluted plot. They need to be more clear to the audience about whats happening and also be more direct. FF7 reboot looses its road so frequently with bullshit, its tiresome.
This also ties with the open world curse. Everything feels unnecessarily bloated and convoluted. Exp 33 does not.
Fourth, its the FF brand. People grew tired of it because they know what pretty much to expect. Grow some balls and take some artistic risks ricebois.
Finally, its clear that the jap vidya directors draw their directorial inspiration from anime and manga, because their cinema is dead and anime slop is all they have left.
They should see more movies and study human expression and film theory in order to do something good again.
