Primary sources are best, but unless you were born and raised in a Hindu country and already learned most of the concepts via osmosis then you’ll need to read 1 or 2 secondary sources first before engaging with the primary sources.

This is just simply untrue, the overwhelming majority of Hindus belong to sects that have a codified and official metaphysics/theology, and these are always sourced back to the Vedas/Upanishads, sometimes with the addition of other Tantric texts on top of this. Despite differences in their metaphysics, they all share the same root scripture and the same shared set of metaphysical concepts inherited from those scriptures. Its like Protestants and Catholics having different metaphysics that is both sourced from the Bible, but just with greater variation.
