It's dudes who've nothing else going for them who are most likely to join such groups. They need to believe that just being in [insert group here] inherently makes them better than everyone outside [insert group here], because if that isn't true, then they'd have to acknowledge that they have nothing else going for them, and for a lot of people, that's simply too hard to do. Extremist groups offer those people purpose, a sense of belonging, and targets to blame all of their problems on.
