When has a "private relationship with Jesus" ever produced anyone like Francis of Assisi? Or Catherine of Siena? Or John of the Cross? Or Padre Pio?

The Church is the link between us and God. It is through the Church and its Sacraments that the Spirit flows into us, and we can be followers of Christ in the world. A "relationship with Jesus" apart from the Church is historically just fruitless.
